Lahey Health is the only multi-hospital system, that includes a tertiary medical center, in the Boston-based region to achieve the highest grade at each of its member institutions

BURLINGTON, MA (May 13, 2015) – Lahey Health’s affiliated hospitals; Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, Addison Gilbert Hospital, Beverly Hospital, and Winchester Hospital all received  an ‘A’ rating – the highest grade – on Leapfrog’s most recent Hospital Safety Score. The Hospital Safety Score grades hospitals based on how safe they keep their patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

Lahey Health is the only multi-hospital system, that includes a tertiary medical center, in the Boston-based region to achieve all A’s. In addition, Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, Addison Gilbert Hospital and Beverly Hospital have all earned an A rating, or “straight As” since the Hospital Safety Score’s inception in 2012—an accolade fewer than 200 U.S. hospitals can claim.

The Leapfrog Group is a nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety, and transparency in the U.S. health care system. The Hospital Safety Score is used to rate hospitals for patient safety and is designed to give consumers information they can use to make informed choices.

Hospital safety scores are derived from 28 measures that are categorized as outcomes or process. The data is generated from national performance measures including; the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey and Health Information Technology Supplement. Of the 28 measures used to calculate the scores, 15 are process- or structure-related and 13 are outcome-based. Hospitals receiving an “A” grade had at least two outcome measures that were among the best performing hospitals nationally.

“Across the Lahey Health system, we strive to deliver the highest quality, safest, most compassionate care to our patients every day, so it is an honor to be recognized for our patient safety measures,” said Howard Grant, JD, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Lahey Health. "This recognition is a reflection of our continuous efforts to improve processes and implement best practices throughout the organization."

Of the 2,523 hospitals issued a Hospital Safety Score, 782 earned an "A", 719 earned a "B", and 1,022 earned a “C” or lower.
