Lahey Health and Winchester Hospital Affiliation Moves Forward As Massachusetts Health Policy Commission Issues Final Report

Partnership will Enhance Care for Local Communities

May 22, 2014

BURLINGTON, MA – Following an extensive review of the proposed Lahey Health and Winchester Hospital affiliation, the Massachusetts Health Policy Commission today issued its final report which recognizes that Lahey Health and Winchester Hospital have demonstrated a commitment to the communities they serve as well as the ability to ensure care is delivered in the most appropriate and cost effective setting.  Under the affiliation, Winchester Hospital would be brought into the Lahey Health system as part of a shared governance model.  Lahey Health and Winchester Hospital are expected to finalize the agreement within the next 30 days.

Together, Winchester Hospital and Lahey Health will build a stronger system of care in key clinical program areas that are responsive to the health needs of the community. Winchester Hospital patients will gain access to tertiary level services locally through Lahey Health while maintaining access to Winchester Hospital providers. Additionally, the Epic electronic health record, widely recognized as the gold standard for improving coordination of care and enhancing patient experience, will be implemented at Winchester Hospital and throughout Lahey Health.

“This is tremendous news for all residents of our communities,” said Kevin Smith, President and CEO of Winchester Hospital. “This new partnership will allow our organizations to continue providing high-quality, cost-efficient, community-based care, and thrive in an evolving healthcare landscape.”

“This is a vote of confidence in the Lahey Health model that our affiliation will improve the quality and coordination of care and patient safety while increasing cost-efficiency,” said Howard Grant, JD, MD, President and CEO of Lahey Health. “Since the inception of Lahey Health, we have kept costs down and care in the community where it belongs. The community hospitals we have added since Lahey Health was created have never been stronger, and we foresee the same excellent results for Winchester Hospital as it joins the Lahey Health network of providers. Together we will deliver on our commitment to provide greater value, higher quality care and improved programs and services to the thousands of area residents who rely on us for their healthcare needs.”

Lahey Health was formed in 2012 in an affiliation between Lahey Clinic, now Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, and the Northeast Health System. Since then, the system has been tremendously successful, redirecting care back to the local communities, and only treating the most acute cases at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. Inpatient volumes at Beverly and Addison Gilbert Hospitals, the hospitals that made up Northeast Health System, are up by eight percent, while the market is down more than six percent.

Winchester Hospital will maintain its own Board of Directors with key responsibilities including oversight of hospital operations and credentialing of medical staff members.
