Northeast Health System and Lahey Clinic Foundation Complete Affiliation Agreement; Officially Establish Lahey Health System

May 01, 2012

Burlington, MA Northeast Health System and Lahey Clinic Foundation announced today that their affiliation agreement is complete and they have officially established the Lahey Health System.

Combined, Lahey Clinic and Northeast Health System have been providing care and services for their respective communities for more than a century. They have always maintained a complementary focus on providing community-based care and have a strong history of successful clinical collaboration. “This is an extraordinary moment in the histories of Lahey Clinic and Northeast Health System,” said Howard Grant, JD, MD, president and chief executive officer of the new Lahey Health System. “We are two organizations that share common goals and values, such as providing the safest and highest quality care with great compassion. By coming together under the new parent organization, Lahey Health System, we will work to ensure a healthier future for the communities we serve by providing patients access to a full continuum of high-quality, cost-efficient services close to home. These services include primary care and outpatient services, general acute-care and highly specialized tertiary services, post-acute short- and long-term care, home health services and a vast array of behavioral health programs.”

While the legal affiliation has been established, Grant emphasized in an announcement to staff at both Lahey Clinic and Northeast Health System that there is much work to do moving forward and identified a few of the organization’s priorities in the first year. These include:

  • Develop a plan to integrate key administrative functions into a centralized model that supports local management.
  • Create a physician leadership council to advise the Lahey Health System Board of Trustees on clinical and physician-related issues.
  • Complete a branding effort to align the two organizations and all subsidiaries with the new parent organization.
  • Begin to identify opportunities to further grow the system.

Patients, colleagues and employees will see or experience little change initially as the system is committed to thoughtful business integration and planning. Patients should continue to see their physicians as they currently do.

“Our goal is to create an exceptional health care delivery system of high-quality, cost-efficient, community-based care,” said Kenneth Hanover, president and chief executive officer of Northeast Health System and executive vice president corporate development and chief strategy office for Lahey Health System. “One,” he said, “that is capable of managing patient care in accordance with changing community needs and new payment and health care delivery systems so that we are able to care for our communities for years to come.”
